Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana 2024

The government has launched the Kusum Solar Pump Distribution Scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana 2022. This initiative aims to provide solar-powered pumps to farmers to replace diesel-powered irrigation machines. This scheme is designed exclusively for farmers, who will benefit from the transition to solar energy for irrigation purposes. The government will provide solar pumps and solar panels under this scheme, allowing farmers to harness solar energy for their agricultural needs.

Under this scheme, farmers will only need to pay 10% of the cost for installing solar panels on their land. The state and central governments will subsidize up to 60% of the cost directly into the farmers' bank accounts, with the remaining 30% provided as a loan by banks. This loan can be easily repaid from the farmer's income.

Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana

  • Convert 17.5 lakh diesel-powered irrigation pumps to solar-powered ones in the first phase.
  • Provide double benefits to farmers by allowing them to use electricity for irrigation and sell surplus electricity back to the grid.
  • Generate an additional 28,000 MW of electricity through the scheme.
  • The government has allocated Rs 50,000 crore for the solar pump distribution scheme, aiming to convert 17.5 lakh diesel pumps and 3 crore agricultural pumps to solar energy over the next 10 years.
